Charles has been growing organic vegetables for sale, without soil cultivation, for thirty years. His current acre of surface composted, undisturbed soil (‘No Dig’ for fourteen years) grows bountiful crops with few weeds. He is currently running an experiment, now in its sixth year, to compare differences in growth between vegetables on dug and undug soil. Yields are mostly similar but different patterns of growth are evident.
Charles’ main output is salad leaves, sold in local shops and restaurants almost all year round, as well as a wide range of vegetables. He has written four books on vegetable growing, contributes articles to many magazines including The Garden, Gardens Illustrated, Grow It, National Geographic and the Blackmore Vale magazine, gives regular talks and runs day courses at the farm and other venues.
