New England Griddle Cakes


  • 300ml warm water
  • 1 tsp black treacle
  • 200g Doves Farm Organic Wholemeal Buckwheat Flour
  • 1 tsp Doves Farm Quick Yeast
  • 75g sugar
  • 50g melted butter
  • oil for frying
  • maple syrup for serving


  1. Measure the water into a jug, add the treacle and beat together.
  2. Put the flour, yeast and sugar into a large bowl and stir to combine.
  3. Add the prepared liquid and beat to a smooth batter.
  4. Beat in the melted butter.
  5. Cover and leave the batter to stand in a warm place for at least 2 hours or up to 12 hours.
  6. Put a little oil into a frying pan, roll it around to cover the surface and heat until nice and hot.
  7. Pour batter into the pan to make 8cm/3” circles and cook on medium heat.
  8. When bubbles appear on the surface and the base is golden turn the pancake over and cook the other side. Transfer cooked griddle cakes to a cooling rack.
  9. Repeat until the batter is used.
  10. Serve warm with maple syrup.
