Windmills
Windmills began to appear in Europe in the 11th and 12th centuries. Large cloth sails set to face the wind were turned by the wind, thereby rotating a main drive wheel, which in turn rotated the millstones.
By Medieval times wind power was being widely used for milling, and windmills began to be a common site all over the countryside.
